Count words, characters and reading time in real time

Our free online word counter gives you an instant, accurate breakdown of any piece of writing the moment you paste or type it. As you work it tallies words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs, then estimates how long the text takes to read aloud or silently. Because everything updates live, you can watch your progress against a target as you draft, trim an overlong paragraph, or tighten a caption to fit a strict limit without ever leaving the page.

Writers face word limits everywhere — university essays, journal abstracts, job applications, meta descriptions, tweets and ad copy all come with a ceiling or a sweet spot. Guessing leads to painful last-minute cuts or padding. This tool removes the guesswork by showing exact figures alongside helpful averages such as words per sentence and characters per word, which are gentle indicators of readability and pacing that help you write clearer, more scannable prose.

Everything happens locally in your browser, so your draft never touches a server and is never stored. That privacy matters when the text is a confidential report, an unpublished manuscript, or client work under an NDA. There is nothing to install and no account to create: open the page, paste your text, and get professional-grade statistics on any device, from a phone on the train to a desktop in the office.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter count words?

The tool splits your text on whitespace (spaces, tabs and line breaks) and counts each non-empty token as a word. Punctuation attached to a word is not counted separately, so "hello," registers as one word. Numbers and hyphenated terms are also treated as single words, matching how most editors and academic style guides count.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. Every calculation happens locally inside your browser using JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device, is never transmitted over the network, and is never stored anywhere. This makes the tool safe for confidential essays, contracts, and unpublished manuscripts.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time is based on an average adult silent reading speed of roughly 200 words per minute. We divide your total word count by that rate and round up to the nearest minute. Speaking time uses a slower rate of about 130 words per minute since people talk more slowly than they read.

What counts as a sentence or paragraph?

Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation — periods, exclamation marks and question marks — while ignoring empty fragments. Paragraphs are separated by one or more blank lines. These heuristics match everyday writing but may miscount unusual formatting such as lists of abbreviations.

Is there a character limit?

There is no fixed limit imposed by the tool, but very large documents (hundreds of thousands of words) may slow down your browser because everything is processed in memory. For typical essays, articles, blog posts and social media captions the counter updates instantly as you type.

Your privacy matters

Word Counter runs entirely in your web browser. Your files, text, and data are never uploaded to any server, never stored, and never seen by us or any third party. This client-side architecture means you can safely process confidential business documents, personal records, and proprietary data without privacy concerns.
